Road to the future: Darlington Borough Council trialling sustainable asphalt solutions with NappiCycle pellets Rainton Construction has partnered with Darlington Borough Council to test a ground-breaking surfacing solution. Listen on BBC Sounds Since becoming pregnant, environmental historian and broadcaster Dr Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough has aspired to bring up her two children as sustainably as possible. In 2017, a Canadian study recommended that people could reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the number of children they have by one. In 2018, there were 731,213 new lives brought into the UK. Furthermore, with 3 billion (yes, billion!) nappies being thrown away into landfill annually, it highlights the importance of finding a viable alternative to nappies being left to rot, with nappies sometimes taking as long as 500 years to fully decompose. It has been well-documented over the last few weeks that there was a collection of shipping containers that have been washing up from a recent spillage in the Bristol Channel. It was later reported that there were eleven containers in total, varying between empty and full of incontinence waste. (more…)
